Nine bachelor students (2nd year students) and one teacher from Aarhus University visited Nordic Seed A/S on Monday the 19th May 2025. The trip is part of their course on breeding and genetics.
Among other input the group had a bus trip to see the COUSIN field trial on field pea, where crop wild relatives are tested to screen for resistance to pea root rot (Aphanomyces euteiches Drechs). There were many questions on breeding and the inclusion of crop wild relatives.
Were also inspected crosses made by Cousin’s Spanish partner (Agencia Estatal Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas – CSIC) between wild relatives and modern field pea cultivars. The segregation is obvious for all – very useful for training. The root rot is not yet present, since the root rot is normally visible around end of June. But the material is extremely diverse and comes from various genebanks collected around the world.
