Nordic Seeds AS – NOS
Nordic Seed (NOS) was established in 2008 and breeds winter and spring wheat, winter and spring barley, peas, lupins, faba beans, hybrid rye, oat and 6-year winter barley. NOS has trial stations in Denmark, Germany, France, England, Ireland, the Baltic States, Sweden and Finland, and several specialized laboratories that carry out many activities to ensure the breeding of high yielding varieties.
In Cousin, they are leading the work on Pea, which has been introduced as one of the project’s 5 flagship crops for several reasons, including:
- A field planted with peas cannot be re-grown with peas for several years
- Aphanomyces euteiches is one of the most devastating diseases affecting pea production
- No known resistance in cultivated peas
- The only hope for resistance is in wild pea.
Specifically, NOS activities are distributed in the following Workpackages:
WP3: Trait characterization of CWRs and pre-breeding germplasm
Task 3.1: Assessing CWR biotic and abiotic stress resilience
WP4 Implementing CWRs in breeding and farming
Task 4.1: Generate selection toolboxes for each flagship crop for use of CWRs in breeding activities
Task 4.2: Implement CWR genetic resources and tools for their use in (pre-)breeding programmes of the five flagship crops across Europe
